The Reaver's Vale is a valley that lies between many empires, but has no banner for itself. Formerly known as the Crownvale, it now lies in abject ruin after years of war, banditry, and now plague have ravaged it. Now its inhabitants struggle over the remains of a once-noble land, fighting against the monsters in the dark and their fellow man alike.

History

Founding

Founded after the civil war following the Apotheosis, this valley surrounded by mountains was established as the Crownvale, and its people the Valiant. Being located at a vital thoroughfare between other major empires, it stood as a hub of economic and cultural trade. The Vale flourished in this position, establishing its own culture among the other great kingdoms.

Wars of Spear and Staff

The prosperity of the Crownvale began to come to an end with the beginning of the Wars of Spear and Staff. The Auroran Sovereignty to the north and the Leyaran Hexarchy to the south began to come to blows over a multitude of perceived slights and desire for greater power. The Legion came down from on high and marched through the Vale, being met by the Magi of the Hexarchy. The fronts of these four wars varied in location, but all took a toll on the Vale. The third took place in the heart of the Vale, and led to the collapse of the Crownvale upon the Exaltation of Aegean, the Oathbound and the beginning of the Incursion.

The Incursion

Following the fall of the Kingdoms Below and the flood of beings from the Othersea spilling upward into the Veilands, the Crownvale was plunged into chaos and ruin. The Wars of Spear and Staff had weakened all factions in the conflict, and the only reason for the Vale's continued existence is that the forces of three kingdoms were present when the doors of Dalkulor were sundered. Thousands perished in the initial onslaught of the Blood Lord's minions. Only the combined might of the Auroran Legion, the Order of Magi, and the knights of the Vale were able to push the horde back into the Tombrealm of Dalkulor after years of bloody conflict against the demonic menace.

The Red Frenzy and the Reavers

Following the closing of the Doors of Dalkulor and the Treaty of Spear and Staff, the Vale was devastated. Junhold was reduced to a smoldering ruin, thousands were left dead or displaced, and the region was left without a ruling crown. As a result, banditry and lawlessness have run rampant across the Veil. The roving bands of outlaws became known as Reavers, and the Reaver’s Veil gained its namesake.

Political Structure

The Reaver’s Vale is unique amongst its neighbors, for it does not have a unifying government that rules over the region. The political powers of the region are organized into fiefdoms that rule over their own regions of the Vale, each with its own customs, laws, and vassals beneath it. These fiefdoms have a tense relationship with one another, with most interaction being curt or outright hostile. Landed knights sworn to a specific Fief treat each other honorably, though will not hesitate to draw steel if interactions go south.
